Tanzania | Sports Sponsorship, iGaming & Community Development
African betting operator SportPesa has strengthened its investment in sports development through a new partnership with the Tanzania Rugby Union (TRU), aimed at supporting grassroots rugby, national competitions and emerging sporting talent.
Under the agreement, SportPesa becomes the official title sponsor of Tanzania’s National Rugby Sevens Circuit, now branded the SportPesa National Saba Circuit.
The five-month partnership will support tournament activities, technical development, fan engagement and national team participation.
A New Chapter for Tanzanian Rugby
The agreement represents an important step towards improving the visibility and development of rugby in Tanzania.
Through the SportPesa National Saba Circuit, the operator will support tournament promotion, digital content, fan engagement and on-ground activation.
The partnership is designed to create more opportunities for players, coaches, match officials and other stakeholders within Tanzania’s rugby ecosystem.
For SportPesa, the initiative builds on its existing involvement in rugby development across African markets, including Kenya and South Africa.
Investing Beyond Tournament Sponsorship
A key feature of the collaboration is its focus on technical education and capacity building.
SportPesa and the Tanzania Rugby Union recently organized a Rugby Level One training session at the University of Dar es Salaam.
The programme was led by Robert Bwali of Rugby Africa and brought together coaches, match officials and technical personnel from across Tanzania.
Participants received classroom and practical training intended to strengthen their understanding of rugby operations and improve professional standards.
This investment demonstrates that the partnership extends beyond advertising visibility to the development of people supporting the sport.
Eleven Teams Participate in Dar Rugby Saba
The second leg of the 2026 SportPesa National Saba Circuit, known as Dar Rugby Saba, brought together 11 men’s and women’s teams at the Leaders Club grounds.
Supporters were granted free entry, helping make the competition accessible to a wider audience.
Matches and highlights were also livestreamed by TV3 Sports through Azam and StarTimes, extending the tournament’s visibility beyond the venue.
The combination of physical attendance and digital broadcasting offers additional exposure for rugby players and the developing domestic competition.
SportPesa Supports Tanzania’s National Team
The partnership also extends to Tanzania’s men’s national rugby sevens team, the Twiga Kings.
SportPesa is supporting the team’s participation in the Obaro 7s tournament in South Africa during October 2026.
International competition provides opportunities for players to gain experience, improve performance and represent Tanzania beyond its domestic sporting environment.
The support reflects a broader effort to connect grassroots development with opportunities at the national and international levels.
What This Means for Africa’s Gaming Industry
SportPesa’s latest partnership highlights the continued relationship between Africa’s betting industry and sports development.
For gaming operators, sports sponsorship can strengthen brand visibility, build relationships with sporting communities and support long-term market engagement.
For sports organizations, commercial partnerships can provide resources for competitions, training programes and athlete development.
However, sponsorship arrangements involving betting companies must also consider applicable advertising regulations, age restrictions and responsible gambling requirements.
The partnership demonstrates how commercial investment can be structured around sporting development rather than promotional activities alone.
Industry Outlook
The SportPesa–Tanzania Rugby Union agreement offers a model for combining competition sponsorship with technical training, grassroots participation and national team support.
Its longer-term success will depend on the consistency of programme delivery and the opportunities created for Tanzanian rugby stakeholders.
As sports sponsorship continues evolving across Africa, partnerships that demonstrate measurable community and sporting benefits are likely to remain an important part of the industry’s commercial landscape.
