Nigeria | 23 October 2026 | Fintech & Payments
Global payments technology company EBANX has launched OPay Direct Debit in Nigeria, introducing a new recurring payment solution that enables international businesses to collect subscription payments directly from customers’ OPay digital wallets.
Announced on 22 October 2026, the integration positions EBANX as the first global payments company to go live with OPay’s recurring payment service, potentially connecting international subscription merchants with 40 million monthly active OPay users.
The development represents another significant step towards expanding cardless digital commerce in Africa’s largest consumer market.
How the New Payment Solution Works
Through the integration, Nigerian customers can authorize recurring payments directly within the OPay mobile application.
Once a customer approves a payment agreement, participating merchants can collect subsequent subscription payments without requiring the customer to manually initiate each transaction.
The solution supports businesses offering services such as:
- Video and music streaming subscriptions.
- Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platforms.
- Digital memberships and online services.
- Other eligible recurring payment products.
For fixed subscription payments, customers receive advance notification before subsequent charges, while retaining the ability to cancel their agreements.
This approach simplifies recurring billing for consumers who primarily rely on digital wallets rather than traditional payment cards.
Why This Matters for Nigeria’s Digital Economy
Nigeria has become one of Africa’s most important markets for alternative payment methods, with digital wallets and bank transfers playing a central role in online commerce.
According to Payment and Commerce Market Intelligence data cited by EBANX, these two payment methods account for approximately 65% of Nigeria’s e-commerce transaction value.
The OPay integration creates an additional route for international businesses to serve customers who may not own or regularly use credit cards.
For subscription-based merchants, it could improve payment convenience, reduce friction and support more predictable recurring revenue.
EBANX Strengthens Its African Payment Infrastructure
The Nigerian launch follows EBANX’s introduction of recurring account-to-account payments through Capitec Pay in South Africa.
That initiative enabled international businesses, including Canva, to offer subscription payments directly through customers’ bank accounts.
With Nigeria joining its recurring alternative payment network, EBANX continues expanding its local payment infrastructure across emerging markets.
The company reports that its recurring alternative payment solutions now span 13 emerging markets across Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Opportunities for African Fintech and Payment Providers
Beyond consumer convenience, the partnership demonstrates the growing commercial importance of local payment infrastructure.
For payment service providers, aggregators and international merchants, integrating trusted domestic payment methods can improve market accessibility and reduce dependence on traditional card-based transactions.
The development may also encourage further innovation in subscription billing, wallet interoperability and merchant payment services across African markets.
However, access to OPay Direct Debit remains subject to merchant onboarding, customer authorization and applicable payment requirements.
iBetAfrica Perspective
The EBANX–OPay partnership highlights an important trend in African fintech: successful payment expansion increasingly depends on adapting to how consumers actually pay.
For international businesses entering Nigeria, local payment integration is becoming a competitive necessity rather than simply an additional checkout option.
As African digital commerce expands, partnerships between international payment infrastructure providers and established local fintech companies could play an increasingly important role in connecting African consumers with global services.
The bigger question is whether recurring wallet payments will become a standard feature across Africa’s rapidly growing digital economy.
