Kenyan fintech Cloud9 has secured a $500,000 equity investment from New York-based crypto accelerator Alliance, as it expands beyond digital banking into cross-border payment infrastructure for African businesses. The investment forms part of an ongoing pre-seed round and brings Cloud9’s total reported funding to $1 million.
From Digital Banking to Cross-Border Infrastructure
Cloud9 is positioning itself as a financial infrastructure platform for African businesses that need to move money across borders.
The company plans to use the fresh capital to:
- expand payment corridors
- improve its platform
- launch virtual and physical cards
- grow its African business and consumer base
- strengthen international supplier-payment capabilities
Cloud9 also supports multi-currency accounts and international payments, while allowing businesses to receive funds through virtual accounts and withdraw into local payment channels.
Stablecoins Behind the Settlement Layer
One of the most interesting aspects of Cloud9’s model is its use of USDC and USDT internally to move value between countries and currencies.
That allows the company to reduce dependence on traditional correspondent-banking routes when building payment corridors.
This is particularly relevant for African businesses dealing with:
- international suppliers
- cross-border settlements
- multi-currency treasury
- regional collections
- local-currency disbursements
Growing Through Acquisitions
Cloud9 has also been expanding through acquisitions.
It acquired Kenyan ticketing company M-Tickets earlier in 2026 and later acquired social-commerce platform Chpter, giving it access to businesses selling through channels such as WhatsApp and Instagram.
That suggests Cloud9 is building more than a simple wallet or payment app—it is trying to create a broader commercial ecosystem around African businesses and digital commerce.
Why This Matters for Africa
Cross-border settlement remains one of the biggest operational challenges for African merchants and digital businesses.
Platforms that can combine:
local collections + international settlement + multi-currency accounts + stablecoin infrastructure
could become increasingly valuable across Africa.
For high-risk sectors such as iGaming, Forex, crypto and digital services, this type of infrastructure is especially relevant because businesses frequently need faster and more flexible settlement options.
iBetAfrica Perspective
For iBetAfrica, Cloud9 is a strong business-development target, not simply a funding story.
There could be opportunities around:
- payment-provider introductions
- merchant connectivity
- African market visibility
- stablecoin settlement discussions
- fintech directory/listing opportunities
- interviews and thought leadership
- partnerships with businesses expanding across Africa
Its current expansion phase makes outreach particularly timely.
